Virtual Advising “Chat and Share”: Impact of Disruption to Studies on Students and Advising Support

Date: 30 June 2020 (Tuesday)
Time: 11:00 am to 12:00 pm
Conducted via ZOOM

What are the issues?
The combined impact of the social movement followed by the COVID-19 pandemic has seriously affected teaching and learning for the most part of this academic year. Year one students did not have a real first-year experience to adjust to university learning; nor did they have enough opportunities to build support network, interact in class or participate in activities. Senior students were not spared. Many found it stressful to cope with studying alone online, decide assessment grading mode to sustain their grades and make exchange/ internship plans. At-risk student cases were complicated by these additional issues and presented even greater challenges to advisers and teachers in supporting their students.

Why this sharing session?
This virtual sharing session provides an opportunity for Faculty Academic Advisers, teachers and colleagues to discuss observations, share advising experience and exchange ideas on how to support their students in the new academic year, in particular the “Year two” students who have just 2-3 month normal university experience, and the academically at-risk students. The ideas shared would be used by AAO to develop new advising resources for online learning for future reference.
