Responsibilities of Students

The relationship between Adviser and Advisee is one of shared responsibility and a two-way process. The following are some of the things that you can expect / should request from your advisees:

  • To take the initiative to contact you. First-year students are encouraged to meet with their Faulty Academic Adviser once every semester
  • To have a basic understanding of the requirements of the curriculum before meeting you
  • To be well prepared for each advising meeting by doing these preparations prior to the meeting:
    • think about their educational, personal/career goals
    • consider their intended course enrollment for the coming semester (and beyond)
    • check the prerequisites for each course they intend to take and consider how they will affect the sequencing of their courses
    • prepare a list of questions or concerns that they would like to raise with you
  • To arrive on time for the scheduled appointment with you
  • To actively ask questions about matters they do not understand or are unclear about
  • To make their own decisions and take ownership of their study
