What is it about?

This unique and practical workshop focuses on how “ACTION” and “INACTION” taken by students in the first year impact on their overall learning progression and outcome. Through first-hand experience sharing and reflection of senior students, participants will learn to approach their study and make academic decisions wisely with a proactive and positive mind set.

Topics to be addressed include:

  • Mistakes to avoid from senior students
    • Things I should do but did not do
    • Things I should not do but did
  • How to make a good study plan
  • Dos and Don’ts
  • The 7 Myths about university study
  • Campus support resources

Success Strategies for the Common Core

Who is it for?

Open for all to attend (especially First-Year students)

What is it about?

This interactive workshop will provide students with an introduction to the essence of Common Core courses and practical advice for a successful learning experience. Through group activities, the Director of Common Core will facilitate a typical learning environment and the skills needed for active participation in class and tutorials. Senior students who are serving as the Common Core Student Ambassadors, will be invited to share their personal learning experience and approaches to different assignments. AAO will also highlight useful study skills and explain how to find academic support.

What is it about?

This highly interactive workshop aims at facilitating a smooth transition to university study for freshmen and maximizing overall learning success. Through different activities, participants will better understand important concepts and approaches to tackle common academic challenges most students may encounter in university studies:

  • Differences between secondary and university education
  • Expectations of a university student
  • How to cope with challenges encountered in classes
  • Course learning outcomes and assessments
  • Effective use of effort in attaining your goals

AAO Academic Adviser will also explain how to find academic support and useful campus resources.

Job Opportunities – Help promote advising culture on campus!

Have you ever got help from your academic advisers and teachers in the past year? Do you have a fruitful experience meeting and learning from them?

We are now looking for student helpers who can help us spread the message of “supportive academic advising culture” on campus. Student helpers are invited to participate in our upcoming video shooting and/or help out with some other promotional activities in the coming academic year.

Rewards such as honorarium, gift coupons and AAO gift sets will be offered to you, depending on the tasks you are assigned to.

To ensure that each student is aware of the academic choices available to him / her under the flexible curriculum and to have good academic progress, the University requires all first-year students to meet with their Faculty Academic Advisers (FAAs) at least once EVERY semester.

It is now over two weeks after the Reading Week and the final examination / semester-end assessment is approaching, please contact your FAA and meet with him / her as soon as possible. If you are not sure who your FAA is, please refer to this video: https://aao.hku.hk/video/video-04/
