Scholarships are awarded in recognition of students’ academic excellence, as well as their achievement and passion to contribute back to society. Apart from financial support, many awards also provide enrichment opportunities to help students realize their potentials or to enhance their credentials for future studies and career pursuits. In this workshop co-organized by the Scholarships Office and the Academic Advising Office, you will gain knowledge and skills to enhance the success of your future scholarship applications.

What can you expect from the workshop

The Workshop will take you through the application process from the search to the award of scholarships, and highlight important points along the way to help you avoid making some common mistakes. Successful scholarship recipients will also share their first-hand experiences. You can use your mobile phones to submit questions to us throughout our presentation and we will attend to them in the Q&A session.

  • How to search for different scholarship opportunities
  • How donors select scholarship candidates
  • Tips to prepare an effective scholarship application (e.g. Application form and personal statement)
  • How to present your strengths and address difficult questions at interviews

Who is it for?

Undergraduates in all years of study who are interested in learning more about postgraduate studies

What is it about?

This workshop aims at introducing to students the benefits and choices of postgraduate studies available at and beyond HKU. The guest speaker will provide participants with practical learnings so as to assist them in making informed decisions on their selection of programmes and to prepare them for the higher academic goal. Topics include:

  • Benefits of postgraduate studies
  • Choices in postgraduate studies
  • Types of admission tests
  • Timeline and preparation
  • Alternatives to postgraduate studies

AAO and the guest speaker will also take questions from the participants in the Q&A session.

This unique and practical workshop focuses on how “ACTION” and “INACTION” taken by students in the first year impact on their overall learning progression and outcome. Through first –hand experience sharing of senior students from different Faculties and group exercises, you will learn to approach your study and make academic decisions wisely with a proactive and positive mindset.

“Speed Friending” for First Year Success

Entering university is a significant milestone in your learning journey. To help you make a smooth transition, the Academic Advising Office will organize two New Student Workshops in September: ‘“Speed Friending” for First Year Success’ (10/9) and “Mistakes I Made in My First Year” (25/9). Details of the first workshop are as follows:

Date: September 10, 2019 (Tuesday)
Time: 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm
Venue: LE 5, Library Extension, Main Campus

Who is it for

Open for all to attend (especially new students)

What is it about

This workshop is designed to provide you with the key strategies for coping with possible challenges in your first-year study. The workshop will be in form of small group sharing, and each group will have a particular topic, for example:

  • How to use Moodle/Degree Audit/ What If
  • How to study Common Core courses
  • How to find materials for your assignments
  • How to handle reading and writing
  • How to communicate with Professors

Each group will be led by a few senior students and they will share with you their first-hand experience on the topic. Participants will swap groups every 15 minutes so that you can have a comprehensive grasp of different topics, as well as a chance to make many new friends.
