“Planning for study abroad workshop 2022”
cohosted with International Affairs Office

In the “Student Survey on Advising Needs and Preferences” conducted by AASO in April 2022, over half of the respondents looked for workshops to help them plan for exchange. We heard you and therefore, joining hands with the International Affairs Office (IAO), we delivered this debut informative session on 19 Oct 2022 in a hybrid mode (face to face and Zoom livestreaming). 275 students joined us and we were so happy to see a full house of participants in the classroom setting!

The workshop started with a detailed briefing presented by Ms Iris Ip from the IAO, covering a comprehensive range of topics that students concern about when applying for study abroad. Ms Ip introduced different study abroad programmes offered / coordinated by IAO, application procedure, assessment criteria, materials to be prepared for the application, time line for result announcement and information about scholarships.

Ms Alice Yeung from the AASO then focused on the academic planning aspect on how students can incorporate studying abroad into their university learning journey. Ms Yeung pointed out some of the key factors to be considered when deciding which year to go on an exchange, whether to join the faculty level exchange or HKUWW programme and what are the differences between semester long exchange and short term programmes. The credit transfer policy and application procedure were also explained thoroughly to facilitate better planning.

In the last part of the workshop, three senior year students from different faculties shared with the participants their exchange experiences in the United Kingdom, Canada and Singapore. The planning tips and challenges they shared were found very useful and pragmatic. The workshop was concluded by a vibrant Q&A session.
