This unique and practical workshop focuses on how “ACTION” and “INACTION” taken by students in the first year impact on their overall learning progression and outcome. Through first –hand experience sharing of senior students from different Faculties and group exercises, you will learn to approach your study and make academic decisions wisely with a proactive and positive mindset.

Dear First Year Students,

AAO Friends Party
Starting first semester at University is not easy. It involves huge adjustments since the learning styles are so different from those of secondary schools. To celebrate your efforts and to share with you some strategies that might help you with a smoother transition, we are going to organize an awesome party for you! Details are as follows:

AAO Friends Party

Date: October 9, 2018 (Tuesday)
Time: 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm
Venue: Academic Advising Office, Room 212, Knowles Building

Contents:

A team of senior students from different programmes will be invited to the party. While you are having your drinks and snacks, they will share with you, in a very casual atmosphere, their tips on how to cope with some common challenges that a new student faces, such as:

  • How to handle large amount of readings in a short period of time?
  • How to study common core courses?
  • How to work with free-riders
  • How to use Moodle?
  • How to avoid plagiarism?

This interactive workshop will provide you with an introduction to the essence of Common Core courses and practical advice for a successful learning experience. The Director of Common Core, through engaging activities, will facilitate a typical learning environment and the skills needed for active participation in class and tutorials. Common Core Student Ambassadors will share their personal learning experience and AAO will highlight useful study skills and explain how to find academic support.

The Essentials of Academic Advising @ HKU

Who is it for?

This workshop is designed for academic and academic-related staff who support and advise students in learning:

  • Colleagues who have been newly appointed to academic advising responsibilities
  • Serving academic advisers who wish to have a quick recap on resources and facilities that can make their job easier and faster
  • New colleagues who want to know the advising and referral system for students in need, whether or not they are formally assigned the role as academic adviser

What will I learn about?

  • Academic advising roles and timeline
  • Ways to engage your advisees and tips on conducting advising meetings
  • Advising students with academic risks
  • New academic advising tools: degree audit and “what if” report, student development roadmap, e-academic planner
  • How to use the SIS advising tools (* Each participant will have a PC to try out the System)
  • Referrals and campus support resources
