When Major Meets Minor Fair 2016-17

On 19 January 2017, Thursday, the Academic Advising Office held its fifth “When Major Meets Minor Fair” at the Ground Floor of the Chi Wah Learning Commons, with the participation of around 350 students across Faculties.

Who was the Fair for?

All undergraduate students

What was the Fair for ?

For exploring different major and minor options available at the University

Who did students meet in the Fair?
  • Advisers from the Academic Advising Office
  • Administrators across 8 Faculties (Architecture, Arts, Business and Economics, Education, Engineering, Medicine, Science, Social Sciences)
  • Careers Advisers from CEDARS (Careers & Placement)
  • Senior students from different programmes
What did students get from the Fair?

How to select major/minor and the relationship between studies and career:
The talk entitled “Your Studies and Career: What to Consider”, conducted by AAO Academic Adviser and Careers Adviser from CEDARS (Careers & Placement), was held during the Fair. The speakers shared with about 85 students across Faculties the relationship between studies and career, employment destinations of graduates from different majors, factors to consider when selecting major/minors and the “5” steps to make the right study decisions.

Information on specific major/minor options and advice from Administrators and Careers Advisers:
Administrators from 8 Faculties were there to answer students’ questions regarding syllabus, regulations and procedures concerning different disciplines of study. Representatives from CEDARS (Careers and Placement) also stationed on site to advise students on the employment destinations of graduates from different Faculties and career options open to them.

Peer advice and sharing:
Senior students with different backgrounds shared with participants their experiences — how they find their right major /minor, what they have actually learnt and the challenges they face in the programmes. There were also small group discussions afterwards for participants to talk to the student representatives from their intended major /minor.

It is now the Add / Drop period (from now until February 2, 2017) of the second semester when you can review your major / minor selection as well as enroll for courses of your potential majors. Faculty Administrators, AAO Advisers, Careers Advisers and Senior Students will be there to attend to your questions. A special talk co-organized by AAO and CEDARS (Careers and Placement), focusing on the relationship between your studies and career, and how to make suitable study decisions, will also be held from 12:30 pm to 2 pm at the same venue on the same day. When Major Meets Minor Fair

Dear Student,

Choosing a major and / or a minor is no doubt one of the important study decisions you make in your university education.

With the Add / Drop period of the second semester coming between January 16 and February 2, 2017, it is now the time for actions. If you are a first-year student, it is timely to explore the wide spectrum of major / minor options and select courses of their potential major(s). If you are a non-final year student, you might need to declare / review your major / minor options.

To help you make informed choices, AAO is organizing the “When ‘Major’ Meets ‘Minor’ Fair 2017″ with details as follows:

When Major Meets Minor Fair

Dear students,

The second semester is coming and the Add / Drop period will be from January 16 to February 2, 2017. This is the time for non-first year students to declare / change their major / minor programmes and for first-year students to explore by selecting courses of their potential majors.

Do you know what you should consider when making this important decision? Just spare 3 minutes to go through our online orientation on major / minor selection! You can get some practical tips from it and receive a special gift from our office upon completion!

If you want to get more information or advice about your major/minor plan, our “When ‘Major’ Meets ‘Minor’ Fair” is for you! It will be held on January 19, 2017 (Thursday), 11 am – 4 pm in the Chi Wah Learning Commons. AAO Academic Advisers, Faculty Administrators and Careers Advisers will be there to attend to your questions. There will be two special events during the Fair:

  1. A talk conducted by experienced careers adviser and academic adviser on the relationship between your studies and career; and
  2. a peer connection session with a team of senior students to share with you how they selected their major / minor and their learning experiences.
