Is Postgraduate Study Right for Me?

Hi Students,

No matter you are a freshman, a senior or a final-year student, have you ever thought about postgraduate study? This is an important decision which requires careful consideration and planning. Join our workshop to hear the sharing of professors and postgraduate students which might give you some clues. Dr Julia Kuehn, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Professor Richard Saunders from the School of Biological Sciences will be happy to share with you their views on pursuing a research degree. Moreover, we have invited the postgraduate students from Architecture, Engineering, Science and Social Sciences and Science to talk about their first-hand experience. Is Postgraduate Study Right for Me?


Date: October 25, 2016 (Tuesday)
Time: 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm
Venue: T4, Meng Wah Complex

Who is it for?

Open to all undergraduates (especially senior year students)

What is it about?

In this workshop, students consider and question if postgraduate study is the right next step. Highlights of the workshop include examining the advantages and disadvantages of further studies, the research and decision-making processes, and the academic transition from the undergraduate to postgraduate level. Guest professor speakers will share with you their expectations from applicants and research postgraduate students, while current M Phil and PhD students will be on a panel discussing common issues faced by prospective postgraduate students.

Some of the topics to be addressed include:

  • What is the purpose of postgraduate study
  • What are the major types of study programmes
  • What are expected from postgraduate students and challenges they face
  • What to consider when making postgraduate study decisions
  • How to research schools/programmes, local and overseas, that are a “good fit”
  • What can you do now to prepare for your postgraduate study

After this workshop, interested participants can learn more about postgraduate study opportunities at HKU and application procedures by attending the MPhil and PhD Information Session – 2016 on November 4, 2016 (Friday) at Wang Gungwu Lecture Hall, Graduate House. Are you adjusting well to your University studies?
Are you exploring a major / minor?
Are you looking for the opportunities for exchange and internship?

To make sure that you are on the right track with your studies and understand well your academic options, the University requires all first-year students to meet with their Faculty Academic Advisers (FAAs) at least once EVERY semester.

Time flies and the reading week (Oct 17-21) is approaching. We hope you have already sought advice from your FAA in your study. However if you have not met with your FAA yet, please contact him / her as soon as possible and arrange the meeting. Workshop Highlights

To provide colleagues with the information on the key features of the University Academic Advising System and to keep them abreast of the latest developments in academic advising, AAO organized a workshop entitled “The Essentials of Academic Advising @ HKU” on September 28, 2016.

A wide range of practical issues were covered in the workshop, such as students’ perception of academic advising, roles of academic advisers, essential information about the academic advising system, updated advising tools and resources to advisers, etc. Dr. Anthony Tam, a very experienced Academic Adviser from the Faculty of Engineering, also shared his tips on how to earn students’ trust and be an effective academic advisor.

The workshop received very positive response, enlisting the participation of about 30 teachers and administrators from different Faculties and University units.

This workshop is designed for academic and academic-related staff who support and advise students in learning:

  • Colleagues who have been newly appointed to academic advising responsibilities
  • Serving academic advisers who wish to have a quick recap on resources and facilities that can make their job easier and faster
  • New colleagues who want to know the advising and referral system for students in need, whether or not they are formally assigned the role as academic adviser

What is its aim?

The overall aim of this workshop is to provide you with the information on the key features of the University Academic Advising System, the latest developments in academic advising, the advising tools in SIS and relevant campus support resources at HKU.

What will I learn about?

Some of the “Must-know” information covered in the workshops are:

  • Academic advising roles and timeline
  • Student development roadmap and common issues
  • How to use simple SIS advising tools
  • Advising students with academic risks
