Postgraduate Student: To Be or Not to Be?

Who is it for?

Open to all undergraduate students.

What is it about?

In this workshop, students consider and question if postgraduate study is the right next step. Highlights of the workshop include examining the advantages and disadvantages of further studies and exploring the academic transition from the undergraduate to postgraduate level. Current MPhil and PhD students will be on a panel addressing common issues and taking questions from the audience.

Some of the topics to be addressed include:

  • Why pursue postgraduate studies?
  • How does being a postgraduate student differ from being an undergraduate student?
  • What determines if you are academically ready for postgraduate research?
  • What are important considerations for finding programmes that are a good fit?
  • What can you do now to help transition next into postgraduate study?

… and any questions that you bring forth.

Pathfinding: Exhibition on Learning Opportunities at HKU

Semester start is always exciting – new courses, new professors, new friends and new opportunities everywhere. To introduce you to the wide variety of learning opportunities available on campus, the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) and the Academic Advising Office (AAO) will jointly organize the Pathfinding Exhibition next week:

Date: September 25-26, 2014 (Thursday and Friday)
Time: 12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m.
Venue: Haking Wong Covered Podium

You will find a wide spectrum of learning opportunities and student support services outside classroom such as student exchange, service learning, experiential learning, library service, health education, sports programmes, English language support, common core curriculum information, personal development and career planning, campus life and student development, academic advising, general education, internship and many more.

There will also be a lucky draw! Do come and have fun!

  • New online academic advising resources to help students and quick tips for FAQs by students
  • Updated academic advising tools in the Student Information System
  • Recent finding from focus groups on students’ experiences with academic advising

Pathfinding: Exhibition on Learning Opportunities at HKU

Welcome to the new academic year. For students who have just joined HKU this year, a hearty welcome on board! We hope all of you are now refreshed and re-energized to meet the new challenges in the coming year!

The purpose of this exhibition is to provide a platform for different units to showcase their wide spectrum of learning opportunities outside the classroom such as student exchange, internship, service learning, library service, foreign languages, sports programmes, academic advising, English language support and many more. We hope that you will get a better idea of how to plan your University life and know where to go for assistance should you need it.

Workshop on Success Strategies for the Common Core

Who is it for?

Open for all to attend (especially Year 1 students)

What is it about?

This playful and interactive workshop will provide students with an introduction to assessment methods in the Common Core and focus on practical advice on how best to actively participate in class and tutorials. The Director of Common Core Curriculum will demonstrate a typical learning environment and request audience participation. AAO will highlight key academic resources and explain how to find academic support.
